Ashanti var en af de store r&b-stjerner i 00'erne. Hun slog igennem i 2002 i duetter med rappere som Notorious B.I.G. og Ja Rule og havde adskillige hits i årene derefter. I 2008 meddelte Ashanti, at hun trak sig fra musikken til fordel for en filmkarriere, som også har kastet roller af sig. Nu er hun tilbage med ordene: "A lot of people counted me out and that feeds my hunger and ignites my passion to continue my journey, I will continue to thrive, continue to prosper, I will continue to be brave. I am Braveheart", som det lyder på denne skive, som ganske rigtigt er inspireret af Mel Gibsons film. Stilen er dog den samme: Romantisk, blød r&b inklusive gæsteoptrædener fra Rick Ross og Beenie Man.

"The material, produced by a mostly new set of Ashanti collaborators (including Sharif Slater, Mansur Zafr, and Detail), is remarkably consistent and satisfying. Although it took longer to complete than Ashanti, Chapter II, and Concrete Rose combined, Braveheart doesn't sound like it".

"BraveHeart sounds as if Ashanti spent her time looking at what everyone else was doing, rather than looking inward. The 33-year-old often sounds unsure of herself here as she tries to update her sound ... In the Rick Ross-featuring "I Got It," Ashanti's voice darts and lands on a worthy assertion - "I just like to celebrate my accolades - as if to say, "Who's to stop me from taking over again, under my own terms?" Otherwise, BraveHeart doesn't sound as if Ashanti's in charge".
