"The patterns of a work by Gerhard Richter inspire one of Reich's most impressive recent pieces, elegantly performed in 2020 ... Matching his music to visual images is not a new departure for Steve Reich ... The cool, elegant Ensemble Intercontemporain performance, taken from a 2020 Paris concert, reveals Reich/Richter as one of Reich's most impressive recent works ... If the music never quite achieves the power and majesty of Reich's Music for 18 Musicians, it has something of that great work's certainty and inevitability, which is more than enough".

"Steve Reich's 2019 piece 'Reich/Richter' takes the composer's habitual kaleidoscopic style to its outer limits - with pleasing results ... George Jackson expertly pushes Pierre Boulez's former ensemble through the pixelating patterns. Some audience snuffling and shuffling is audible in this otherwise mesmeric performance".

"Steve Reich's music is often compared with the visual paintings and sculptures of like-minded artists ... Reich/Richter is different insofar as it shows the American composer applying the same method that painter Gerhard Richter created for his 2016 'Patterns' exhibition ... So he contacted Reich to ask whether he might compose a piece that could be played alongside a video installation of these patterns ... The live performance by Ensemble Intercontemporain under George Jackson in Paris in March 2020 is particularly effective at balancing each individual line in relation to the overall musical result ... This latest recording provides further testimony of [Reich's] ability to shape time in unique and fascinating ways".
