"On the rostrum Jonathan Webb shows insufficient sympathy with the Rossini idiom and fails to bring much verve or vivacity to the proceedings. A mediocre singing cast does not help him".

"It becomes clear, once the action proper begins, that we are in a sort of fantasy film world inhabited by Fellini-like grotesques and caricatures who populate the stage throughout. But ... what makes the whole enterprise so rewarding is the sheer quality of the performance. All the singers with the exception of the Turk himself and Fiorella are Italians, and their engagement with their own language pays ample dividends in the adroitness of the rapid delivery and the engagement with the recitatives ... Speranza Scappucci's conducting is splendidly alert. The skirling piccolo add all the brilliance and edge that Rossini needs. The choral singing too is marvellously full-bodied. There is never any sense here that we are hearing Rossini at anything less than full dramatic pelt, and so the whole performances fizzles".

"Til munter Rossini ... med den østrigske chefdirigent Franz Welser-Möst. Er han end ikke så genial og raffineret i sin Rossini-tolkning, som han var fremragende som Wagner-dirigent i Tannhäuser, udsendt af EMI på dvd, så er han også her en seriøs og dejlig musiker. Cesare Levis iscenesættelse er stilistisk ordentlig, men ikke overvældende morsom i længden".

"Der Regisseur Davide Livermore liebt die Oper und das Kino gleichermassen ... In dieser fast schon absurden Rossini-Buffa von 1814 sucht ein pirandellesker Dichter seine Opern-personen (perfekte Mastroianni-Kopie: Pietro Spagnoli) ... Er findet am Strand Zigeuner ... ihren liebestollen Türken (Erwin Schrott, mit viel Bassgusto und Machzwinkern) sowie eine lockere Dame (Peretyatko, süss im Pünktschenkleid als singende Claudia Cardinale) samt dusseligem Gatten ... Das schnurrt, vorangetrieben von eine herrlichen Typenparade fellinesker Statistinnen und dem clownesk ausstaffierten Chor, als quirlige Backstage-Comedy auf einem chaotischen Filmset ab.
