"It's interesting because fusion was the bridge for many from rock to jazz in the `70s. Others, like this writer, were selective about fusion and grew weary of much of it, turning instead to the more straight-ahead or even avant-garde jazz recordings during that period. Yet, we're now 40 years past the time of this recording and it sounds surprisingly refreshing. The energy alone is the reason both to listen and savor it".

"The band broke up the next year and, 'comeback' album notwithstanding, probably did the right thing as the jazz-funk 'explosion of the 'seventies and 'eighties was running its course. But for a decade, it shone brightly, and the Brecker Brothers were its Alpha Centauri, always on the verge of a supernova. This album won't be to everyone's tastes and, truth be told, it sounds a little dated. But hey, they don't make 'em like this anymore".

"Renowned for marrying bebop-inflected horns with searing funk grooves, the band was an incendiary live act. If you never saw them in the flesh then, "Live And Unreleased", recorded on their 1980 European tour, is a must-hear double album".
