"Rondane is the kind of debut that sounds almost too accomplished and self-assured to be a debut. Its theme certainly doesn't hurt: the album is named after a Norwegian national park, and the picturesque quality can't help but enhance such an endeavor in anyone's hands. Credit where credit's due, though - this young trio sounds sharp and versatile enough to spin beautiful ear candy out of anything they tackle ... Audun Barsten Johnsen is... well, for starters, the kind of bandleader who'd lead a combo under his first rather than last name. The informality definitely suits the group's warm chemistry and his cordial writing style; the self-penned compositions often give the impression of good friends sharing some fascinating vacation photos. "Present Joy" evokes a summer-day drift down a stream with happy wordless chanting, while the oddly-named "Ragtime" unexpectedly turns out to be slow easygoing Americana full of charm".

"En stor overraskelse! ...

"This is a band that values exuberant music making above any pretensions of being 'cool' - by which I mean their concern is to be fun rather than studious. But, in their own way, this creates a music that generates its own cool ... [There's a] breadth of musicianship in this young trio that suggest that they've plenty of imaginative ideas to build a career upon, as well as a strong melodic sensibility that gives rise to some memorable tunes".

"Pianist Audun Barsten Johnsen, the leader of Audun Trio, is 24, has degrees from the University of Agder and the Oslo Music School ... He considers Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett to be two of his main influences, and certainly some of the music on Rondane sounds closely related to the latter player's style. Johnsen performs eight of his own compositions on this Losen Records release, which feature concise performances that set a mood, but don't overstay their welcome ... A bit more stretching out, as well as some more mood and tempo variations, would have added to the value of this set. But Rondane is an excellent early effort for this Norwegian trio".
