"What it's not is a programme dedicated to composers of colour. Instead, it's partly a celebration of the fact that when there began to be an American sound in classical music, that sound came from black music ... Goosby's mentors include Sanford Allen, the dedicatee of Perkinson's pieces and the first black violinist in the New York Philharmonic, and Itzhak Perlman. You can hear the influence of the latter in the suavity and lushness of his playing, never more so than in the slow middle movement of William Grant Still's 1943 Suite: Goosby finds a special tone here, soft but vibrant, and the melody soars".

"Recommended: Randall Goosby is the new violin sensation coming out of the USA ... and with this, his debut disc, he more than amply repays the great faith Decca obviously have in him. This is a lovely exhibition of sensitive, eloquent, and disarmingly affectionate violin playing with just enough virtuosity to tickle the fancies of those who like that kind of thing but shot through with an open-hearted musicianship and a luxuriance of tone which marks him out as something very special".

"Editor's choice - June 2021: You only have to hear the way he phrases the first three notes of Summertime to realise this young American violinist is something special, but it's the less familiar fare that really makes this an album to conjure with: Xavier Dubois Foley's Shelter Island makes for an irresistible opener, the two Perlman Program alumni riffing off one another with giddy exuberance, whilst Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson's Blues Forms showcases Goosby's virtuoso chops and distinctive, glassy upper register to perfection".

"Goosby's selections reveal him as a quietly lyrical artist with a gift for genre hopping well displayed in the Baroque/blues fusions of ColeridgeTaylor, Perkinson's Blue/s Forms or Xavier Dubois Foley's Shelter Island, in which violin and double bass spend five minutes hanging loose ... Still, within its limits, this is an engaging album, warmly recorded".

"Editor's choice: Listen to the directness and controlled energy with which Goosby and the pianist Zhu Wang launch themselves at Dvořák's melodies: the playful kick they give to his rhythms and the glow of their collective tone ... This is selfless, stylish playing which - paradoxically - ends up by projecting the personalities of both artists with even more freshness and warmth ... Goosby is a virtuoso: he can sing, full-throated, and shape fluid, gleaming phrases high on the E string with the best of them ... One of the more intelligent - and engaging - debut discs I've heard in recent years".
