"Barraine is a composer whose music was unknown to me and I was curious to investigate (...) Throughout this programme, Cristian Măcelaru obtains committed and skilful playing from the Orchestre National de France; conductor and players are persuasive advocates for [her] music. (...) Barraine's music deserves to be better known. I found this disc was a very good introduction to her music".

"Barraine's music employs a tonal harmonic language that nevertheless freely incorporates dissonance. Her refined and sophisticated orchestration clearly reflects Dukas' influence. A penchant for angular melodic writing can yield to moments of achingly sweet lyricism ... her music inhabits the same sound world as Stravinsky and Poulenc, though she has her own distinct and impressive voice".

"Her First Symphony, written 1931 ... begins with a slightly ominous Andante whose bleak mood is shattered by a Vivace rife with aggressive rhythmic energy. The slow movement ... is the emotional heart of the score, and CristianMăcelaru gives these Adagio outer sections with quasi-Brucknerian fervour ... The Orchestre National de France play with commitment and polish for Măcelaru, and Warner Classics' recording is warm".
