"Much of the text is delivered as melodrama over suitably doomy, atmospheric textures from the 12-piece ensemble ... In the sections that Hosokawa does assign to the singing voice, it's still hard to escape the incessant rhyming couplets of the original, even at the climax, when the music finally achieves a kind of operatic intensity. Hellekant delivers it all superbly, though; without a performer of her dramatic presence, it wouldn't be half as convincing as it is".

"You get 15 minutes of the Swedish mezzo reading Poe's famous poem in vivid atmospheric style ... After this comes the Japanese composer Toshio Hosokawa's setting of the same poem, part narrated and part sung by Hellekant ... There's an uncloying openness about her voice and she has a memorably intelligent and emotional way of projecting words, mood and meaning ... Much the same applies to the Hosokawa setting ... Every detail feels commandingly delivered ... Hosokawa, Poe and Hellekant share the headlines here and not necessarily in that order".
