"Roger Eno's first solo album for German classical institution Deutsche Grammophon ... The pieces on The Turning Year, some of which have been a part of Eno's live repertoire for a while, are simply described by the artist as short stories or photographs that are closely related to each other. The song titles point to themes of reflection and hope for the future, but there isn't an overarching common thread ... and they're presented in various levels of intimacy, with some more atmospheric than others ... This masterful release contains some of the most immediately appealing work in Eno's discography".

"Roger's latest solo album, The Turning Year, is out now ... The Turning Year allows the listener to step through Roger Eno's looking-glass, filled as it is with free-flowing, affecting compositions. A blend of recent compositions and live favourites from Eno's concert repertoire, the album offers a comprehensive presentation of Roger's solo work. "The Turning Year is like a collection of short stories or photographs of individual scenes, each with its own character but somehow closely related to the other. These pieces allow us, perhaps, to think on how we live our lives in facets; how we catch fleeting glimpses, how we walk through our lives, how we notice the turning year" (Roger Eno)".

"The pianist Roger Eno's second album for Deutsche Grammophon - after 2020's duet with his brother Brian - features 14 ultra-slow piano-led miniatures. There are some pretty melodies here, like "Bells", "Hymn" and "An Intimate Distance", but there are some tracks where Eno's melodies are so minimal that they become quite mind-numbingly banal ... On the title track, and on the oboe-led ballad "On The Horizon" it's the upholstery provided by the string ensemble Scoring Berlin, that brings Eno's very simple melodies to life".
