"Less than a year after the Lutosławski Quartet released its recording of Grażyna Bacewicz's seven quartets on Naxos, here is a rival from the Silesian Quartet ... Which to choose? The most striking difference is speed: the Silesians knock minutes off the run times of each quartet compared to the Lutosławskis, and their default playing style is springy and fleet-footed, bringing out the idiomatic nature of Bacewicz's string writing ... In the end the Lutosławskis' weightier reading is perhaps the more satisfying, but the Silesians' version is highly persuasive too, and it is good to hear these works interpreted differently".

"Recording of the month: The subsequent quartets demonstrate the development of Bacewicz's musical style and her mastery of the quartet form. In this respect this Chandos double is a winner as it presents the quartets in chronological order; the only set to do this ... This is an excellent recording of these fine works".

"The seven quartets of Grazyna Bacewicz form a significant, too-little known chapter in the history of post-war music ... These lived-in readings ... deepen and enrich our understanding ... The Silesian lend vibrant warmth to ... the lithe First Quartet ... and handle [the later quartets] with precision and élan: a tremendous achievement".

"Recording of the month, Editor's choice: These seven works, composed between 1938 and 1965, add up to a compelling portrait of a powerfully original creative spirit ... The whole group seem to understand this life-affirming music from the inside ... A shared commitment to letting Bacewicz speak. And that's something profoundly worth hearing".
