"At times like these, Mixing Colours merits its place on respected classical label Deutsche Grammophon. But on the whole, the album is too inoffensive to leave much lasting impression. Over 18 songs, its initially appealing tastefulness becomes cloying and monotonous. Instead of the dynamism of mixing colors, the album mostly yields just a uniform pastel wash".

"Much of the album consists of sparse, gentle notes that resound clearly, with sound waves reverberating from the center like ripples on a pond. Many of the compositions seem simple enough to be played on an acoustic piano, but Brian's sonic manipulations add so much character and take them just enough into the realm of the unfamiliar that the record doesn't directly resemble any other".

"Anyone hoping for a varied, texturally rich set is heading for disappointment, as most of the pieces feature one or occasionally two keyboard parts. The only other elements are some drones and subtle echo and reverb effects. And elegant and haunting as the individual tracks may be, it's difficult to remain engaged throughout 75 minutes of music with such a uniform mood".
